The Quick and Byte-Free Tips in Buying Computers

With hundreds of brands and models out there, the choice is just overwhelming. You don’t want to end up with something puny, but neither do you want something too loaded with features that you don’t need anyway. How to start then?

When you’re buying a computer, the first thing to decide is whether you need a desktop or a laptop. With that out of the way, you need to know then which features you want in your computer, as well as which PC manufacturer you want.

The primary benefit of buying a Windows-based PC is the popularity of the Microsoft Windows operating system. These computers have been top-of-the-line in terms of software compatibility, claiming about 90% of the market share. Most software application developers think about Windows first, while Mac second.

However the Apple Mac computer does have some advantages with regards to speed and performance. The Macintosh performs extremely well in terms of graphical editing, video, and multimedia, making more efficient use of memory and processing power. Macintoshes might have quite a number of profound strengths, but because of their low market share they can sometimes be found wanting in regards to compatibility with mainstream business software.

Once you’ve decided on the PC, the next thing to consider is the price. Be aware that computer manufacturers have a price tag that represents the barest bones computer and most probably, you’ll end up paying hundreds more dollars than the initial price tag once you have included all the configurations you need. Don’t be fooled by believing you have great value because of all the software that is included. Often you don’t need half of it.

Finally, consider the tech support offered by the company after purchase of your PC. Remember, you may get a really great deal, but if the computer breaks down, will you get the after sales support you need?

In today's world of digital media, pictures say more than a thousand words. Plus with the advent of latest technology in the field of electronics, media etc, taking a picture isn't a big deal anymore. Its editing those very pictures that seem to be the greater deal in regards to these matters. Pictures may be varied sources, they may be an occasion of celebration, a certain rare moment in one's personal lives, even perhaps a beautiful scenery, or even maybe just photography for the professionals. So there are ubiquitous numbers of places where pictures may be taken. Now once the picture is clicked, it may or may not be the best frame. Often due to lack of proper lighting or background distortions may provides discrepancies to the quality of the image. Improving Your Computer's Performance with a Hard Drive

Do you not just hate it when your PC freezes at a time you need it the most, like when you are about to finish your term paper or report? Is it not annoying and humiliating that it goes through certain malfunctions when you are about to make an important presentation or discussion? Although it is normal to experience technical problems from time to time, you really do not have to bear with them all the time. There are a number of ways that you can remedy those issues.

Here are a number of tips that you can follow that will surely improve the performance of your computer:

1. It is very important that you run a virus scan at least weekly. If you do not have this kind of program, you can purchase one online and update it regularly. Also, there are certain sites that provide free check-ups for your device. When scanning the PC, do not forget to include the accessories too, including data storage devices like pendrive. This is to ensure that all your electronic gadgets are free of virus.

2. There is that certain software in your gadget called a Scandisk. It is ideal that you run it at least every two months. It will do a one-by-one inspection of all your files and folders and will let you know if there are certain issues happening or if there are problems developing.

3. Since you are most likely connected to the Internet, it is a must that you install a firewall on your computer. It will prevent viruses, bugs, and hackers from getting access in your device. It can protect you from all the threats online.

4. The gadget will tend to run slow if the memory is running low. So, it is best that you clean out files and folders that you do not need any more. Or, you can just buy a hard drive that will serve as an extra storage space. Also, if there are certain unnecessary software installed, it is best that you just delete them as they can make the performance of your PC poorer.

5. Another way that you can save space is by changing the settings of your history. It will consume so much memory if it saves all your visited pages. What you can do is to make it automatically delete all the information a few days after you have searched for those sites.

6. Make sure that you reboot your computer regularly. Simply turn it off so that it can restart properly. Just like you, it needs a rest too.

Trojan Horse Viruses

Most people are familiar with the legend of the Trojan horse. During the siege of Troy, the Greeks left a large wooden horse outside the gates, allegedly as a peace offering. The Trojans brought the horse inside the city walls only to discover it was full of Greek soldiers who quickly sacked the city.

A computer Trojan horse is similar. It looks like a benign or useful program but actually contains hidden code that can destroy data or install spyware.

A Trojan horse is often referred to as a virus, but unlike a true computer virus doesn't replicate itself. It's simply designed to gain access to your system and wreak havoc - like the mythical Greek soldiers.

Many Trojan horses (or simply 'Trojans') are spyware, used to monitor your computer activity and send information to a third party without your knowledge or consent.

Spyware can be used to deliver unsolicited pop-up ads, or to log private information such as credit card numbers and passwords, or even reroute your browser to a commercial site. The unscrupulous vendor at that site usually paid the spyware creator to do just that.

Another common use for a Trojan is to install a 'backdoor' - an access point to your computer which bypasses the normal login procedure. Hackers use backdoors to gain control of your computer to send spam or to wreak malicious damage. Since the damage appears to originate from your system it can be hard to combat.

Geeks make a distinction between 'crackers' who gain access to a system to do harm, and 'hackers' who just want to understand the details of how a system works. We'll stick with the more common, though less accurate, term.

How Trojans Are Distributed

Trojans are hidden in programs which appear useful. You visit a free utility site, download one and run the program. Your system is infected.

They can also be spread by e-mail attachments. If the attachment contains an executable file, that program can also contain a Trojan which will infect your computer as soon as it is run.

Executable files have extensions such as .exe but sometimes the extensions are hidden to make the file look like a harmless text file. An example of this would be a file named 'look_at_me.txt.exe. The user may not notice the '.exe' part of the filename (the extension) and think it's a text file. Some operating systems allow users to hide extensions, so in this case the user would simply see 'look_at_me.txt'.

Newer tactics involve embedding them in certain image files. The lesson is: never open a file from someone unknown, or when its arrival is unexpected. Even well-meaning individuals pass on viruses this way.

It's common for Trojans to be spread through operating system vulnerabilities. An operating system controls the basic functions of the computer. Computers connect to the Internet through 'ports', some of which present security risks. Malware takes advantage of these vulnerabilities.

One well-known Trojan is called Sub7. Some claim it has legitimate uses (such as remotely controlling your own computer), though it's often used for illegal activities. Computers with Sub7 installed are accessible from a remote location and can be used to steal credit card numbers by logging keystrokes for example.

Fighting Trojans - The modern way

Most antivirus software will detect and remove Trojans. Keep your virus database up to date to provide the best protection. Some antivirus programs require you to manually scan attachments or other incoming files. Get one that does it automatically. The cost difference is negligible.

Always use caution when opening email attachments, even if they come from a known source. If the attachment is unexpected it should be suspected.

Firewalls should also be used to close vulnerabilities when using the Internet.

Notebook Computers in the Age of the Internet

Everyone knows that our world cannot exist without computers. Ever tried to make a purchase at a convenience store when their computers are down, ever waited for someone to make change when their register computer is down, or have you ever tried to find a book in a library when the system is down? If you have ever experienced one of these inconveniences, you know that our world hinges on whether or not our computers are working.

Remember when you told your teacher that the dog ate your homework? Did she believe you? Probably not. Now the excuse is my computer crashed, my printer wouldn't print, or we were out of ink. Even kids rely on computers to do their schoolwork. The days of pen and pencils are almost over. In fact most students know more about computers than their teachers or parents. They don't even remember a time without computers.

As computers become more and more intuitive and powerful, we must proceed with them. If you are still among the population that resents the encroachment of the computer, think about this scenario. If Eve in the Garden of Eden had access to the Internet, she could have looked up information about snakes. She would have found out that they have forked tongues and an evil reputation. Instead of listening to the snake's lies, she would have thrashed him with a tree branch. Think how much better our world would be now.

The best present any graduate can get this June is a desktop computer or a laptop. In my day, girls were given matching luggage to take their clothes to school. Yes, I know I am dating myself, but I do have a point. Today buy your child a computer and let them take their clothes is a paper sack. They don't care; an old gym bag will do. I know; schools have computer labs, but they are always full. Wouldn't you rather your son or particularly your daughter not be out of the dorm or apartment working on projects or papers? Also, when your newly graduated senior has moved away to school, e-mail will become your best friend. Even if you hate computers, you will learn to love them because they will become your link to your child. The nest will never be empty as long as you have e-mail.

Computers are links to the outside world. The world has never been more accessible or smaller. You have to keep up or you will be left behind and who wants to be the last straggler on the planet? Not me!

After years as an educator and more degrees than she can count, Frances Coleman now writes professionally. She is a prolific reader with an advanced degree in research techniques. See her review of notebook computers.

Choosing A Video Card

A video card is that device ( a loaded circuit board ) that determines the screen output or video display of the computer. It is also known as the graphics card, graphics adapter, display adapter or video adapter.

The video card is either installed directly on the mother board or in an expansion slot. The intended use determines which type to use.

What To Check For When Choosing A Video Card

1. Determine how the computer will be used. Is it for computer games or just for ordinary encoding?

There are different types of video cards for different uses.

2. RAM is resolution required to meet the video output needed.

The memory of a video card is very important for speed because it holds the common operands for the images. Since the video card can access its own memory faster than that of the mother board, the images are displayed faster.

3.Mother board and Video card format compatibility.

A mother board doesn't support all kinds of video cards. Some mother boards only have the GPUs or graphics processing units which maybe adequate for an average business or home use but not applicable where more graphics capabilities are needed. A GPU is a video card's own processing unit.

Mother boards may have the following expansion slots: AGP slots, standard PCI slots, 1xPCI EXpress slots, 16xPCI Express slots. Make sure the video card and the slot where it will be installed are compatible

The 16XPCI Express slot has compatibility with the most video cards, so it is advisable to buy this card for a new computer. The next newest slot is the AGP slot which came before 16xPCIExpress.

The least recommended slot is the PCI slot because there are only a few video cards compatible with it and most of them are the slow , expensive type.

4. TV output capability

Not all video cards have this capability. Be sure to check this out.

5. The fan on the video card must be working to prevent over heating of parts which slows down its performance.

6. Price- how much can you afford to pay?

The compatibility of components determine how the equipment functions. In the case of video cards, there is more need to check for compatibility due to the various models developed to meet various needs.

Incompatibility is expensive, for how will you install a video if it doesn't fit in the expansion slot?

The Best Way to Clean a DVD Player

We use a DVD for several applications. We can watch a movie in it or play your favorite video games. The DVDs may not function well if it becomes dirty. It has a tendency to skip when it becomes too dirty. It will also have a hard time reading the information properly. The dirt becomes a hindrance for reading the data. Cleaning the DVD is not so hard as long as you follow the right steps accordingly. This is moderately difficult task. The things you will need are duster, cleaning disc, alcohol, q-tips, screw driver and three in one oil.

1. The first step on how to clean a DVD is unplugging it properly. You should make sure that it's completely connected. You should then put it in another place where you would get a lot of room for cleaning it.

2. The second step on how to clean a DVD is examining the player. Check the vents and the fans. You must check if there is a thick build up of the dirt or grime. If the area with the vents already has a big accumulation then it means that you have not cleaned it for a very long time. It would not help if you use the duster on it because it will just get blown back to the player. If the accumulated dust is just light then you should start cleaning it by just blowing on it. There are some DVD players that let you open it up so you can blow on it easily.

3. The third step on how to clean a DVD is putting the disc for cleaning it. You can just watch as it does its job. For a large accumulation of dust or dirt it may not play properly. However if the disc for cleaning finished until the end then you can end your cleaning process

4. The fourth step on how to clean a DVD is disassembling the DVD. This will enable you to clean and remove the large build up of dirt properly. You should start this by looking for the player's seams, security tape and screws. Be careful of the tape because if that breaks then you will not be able to avail your warranty in case it breaks down. You can risk this and open the player. You do this by first removing the screws which you will find on the player's bottom. You should just be taking the casing out then remove the dust accumulation on the vents first by using your duster. Be careful not to shake it because the nitrogen might leak out and damage the player.

5. The fifth step on how to clean a DVD is putting alcohol on your q-tips. Then swipe it on the part with the laser. You can then rub it on the rails if you find any dust on it. Do not swipe the alcohol on the circuits.

6. The sixth step on how to clean a DVD is letting it dry properly. You start by dipping a q-tip with the oil and brushing it on the rails. Then after a few minutes of drying you can close it now and then play the disc for cleaning the player. Then if it plays all the way to the end then you have successfully cleaned your DVD.
